Girls Gone WoW

Some girls join World of Warcraft because their boyfriends play. Some girls play because their friends all play. Some girls play simply because this one caught their eye. There are a number of reasons why girls play World of Warcraft, much like there are a number of reasons why guys play. Once they log on and create a character, however, the difference between girls and boys in the world of WoW becomes much more pronounced. Even though they may join for social reasons, the downside of socializing within WoW is often not something a girl expects, whether this is her first game or her hundredth.

It comes down to there are boundaries between "fun" and "harrassment." Male or female you have to know what your own boundaries are, and how to set them. You cannot control the behavior of others, but you can control your own.

This reminded me when a guy was hitting on my wife while playing Guild Wars. Since i am a male and play mostly female characters i decided to have a little fun with him letting him know he was hitting on my wife. Even though i play mostly female characters i don't seem to get this type of attention all to often but have seen it happening to others in game.

As a female gamer I can tell you that not a day goes by in game without me being hit on, ranging from the mild "asl?" to the blatant "come sit on my face", and in situations where I've been in a position of authority I've had to deal with personal attacks and snide comments based only on the fact that I am a chick. I think the psychological analysis offered in this article is accurate, I just wish she'd figured out a way to fix the problem.

The issue is there and it is real. But I didn't feel she put her viewpoint across very well or documented the problem in a coherent way. I think female gamers will look at it saying "I know what she meant" but I don't think the article actually does any good (or even bad).

Paragraph breaks would be an added bonus.

Well it was written by a female, and honestly what she wrote about in that article was pretty much what a lot of female gamers have to put up with. Males still make up a lot of the MMORPG player population, and they really do treat a lot of female gamers like that. Also there are tons of male gamers who have female characters, and then they try to mooch off of other players by pretending to flirt.

She could have used a few extra paragraphs, but the article is sort of spot on with a lot of female gamer experiences.

I'm all about a good meta article once in a while, but that there is a load of self-contradictory yap. It feels a lot more like the uninspired blogging of an emo teenager than an article on an otherwise interesting subject.
