Girl Gamer: WoW Virgin

An interesting perspective from a Brittish gamer after giving WoW a try. I strongly identified with the writer's reaction to some of the initial quests, in particular. Killing enemy players? No problem! Lions and tigers and bears? Oh, no! In fact, no player griefed me more than my own beloved hubby...by ganking innocent lvl 1 rats in SW. But neither of us touched the SM kittens, except for that one unfortunate time when I tried to *pet* one...

Killing the animals never bothered me when I played WoW. Just like in any game, even Mario... kicking turtles & mush'n mushrooms didn't really bother me. But I have to agree the Kitten sound does get to you when they die. I'm sure if the bullets had that sound in Mario no one would jump on them.

Yeah, running STV always made me feel ill and not 'cause of the ganking. It was even worse when I tried out the hunter class. Pitting kitty against kitty was just...ick.

Yeah, I hate killing critters too Stranglethorn Vale was horrendous, I skipped it for the most part on my second character. I didn't do any of the animal quests in Nagrand either, lol. My husband relished killing the elekks for their ivory, just because he knew it annoyed me. I don't mind the quests where there is a purpose for killing fuzzy wuzzy critters (diseased, too many for the environment to support etc.). I have no problems killing humanoids. I agree with the previous poster (Valin) regarding the over-satiation factor. I've not been able to really enjoy any MMO's recently, and was discussing the other day how amazed and excited I was the first time I ran Deadmines. I'd love to recapture that feeling.

Sounds to me like this gal has never played a mmorpg like WoW let alone WoW itself before that day. I can barely even remember what it was like when I first delved into the world of fantasy mmorpgs (was back in '97 with UO). I just remember at the time it was the most interesting thing I had ever done in my life up to that point. Kind of reminded me of being in a book with a bunch of strangers. Sad enough to say is that when I first started reading the article I had forgotten how such novel things for her had become so mundane to me due to over-satiation. I honestly wish I would either revert to my initial understanding of MMOs or have a virtual reality one created that would draw me into the genre again due to the novelty.
