RUMOR: NCsoft To Shutter Austin Studio

Hot on the heels of news that Midway would be laying off approximately 90 employees from its Austin location comes a tip from a reliable source that NCsoft Austin (a.k.a. NCsoft North America) is on the verge of eliminating all of its development staff. The studio is currently home to the teams behind Tabula Rasa and Dungeon Runners, the latter of which will "be closed," according to our source. We've been told that only customer support staff will continue to operate out of the branch.

Yeah, I just checked back at the official DR boards to follow up on this, and they've lost about 70% of their people.

"Alrighty...

80% is a bit high. We lost 13 of the 18 people working on the game. By my calculations, that is 72.22%. So, it's not as bad as it seems.

The five remaining folks are:

Stephen Nichols- Producer / Lead Programmer
Scott Stevens - Senior Programmer
Mark Tucker - Lead Designer
Brandon Cotton - Senior Designer
James Cleaveland - Technical Artist

As you might imagine, we're reeling from this right now. It's gonna take us a while to get our stuff together and regroup for future efforts.

Thankfully, our new build is in QA and is progressing nicely. So, that's a good thing.

Well... I doubt they'll actually kill anything that's making more money than it costs, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are some layoffs, considering the economic situation and all.

It's just a rumor. According to DR's big cheese, Stephen, it isn't closing. Or, at least, DR isn't closing. He also says, "No more info at this time: which makes me wonder if something isn't up...just that DR is safe.
