Nintendo Confirms Wii Price Cut to $199
Submitted by LordXenophon 1854 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1854 days ago
It was just announced by Nintendo that the Wii will drop in price to $199 beginning on September 27, 2009. This marks the first time that the company has dropped the price of the Wii since it launched in November 2006, an exceptionally long period of time for any console to go without a drop in price. Nevertheless, the price cut is a much needed boost to a system that for the first time feels pressure from its rivals.

Police Officers Commit Wii Indiscretion
Submitted by LordXenophon 1856 days ago on Off Topic

With guns drawn and flashlights cutting through darkened rooms, Polk County undercover drug investigators stormed the home of convicted drug dealer Michael Difalco near Lakeland, Florida in March. As investigators searched the home for drugs, some drug task force members found other ways to occupy their time. Within 20 minutes of entering Difalco's house, some of the investigators found a Wii video bowling game and began bowling frame after frame. While some detectives hauled out evidence such as flat screen televisions and shotguns, others threw strikes, gutter balls and worked on picking up spares. A Polk County sheriff's detective cataloging evidence repeatedly put down her work and picked up a Wii remote to bowl. When she hit two strikes in a row, she raised her arms above her head, jumping and kicking. While a female detective lifted a nearby couch looking for evidence, another sheriff's detective focused on pin action. But detectives with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the Auburndale, Lakeland and Winter Haven police departments did not know that a wireless security camera connected to a computer inside Difalco's home was recording their activity. The recording obtained by News Channel 8 in Tampa showed several members of the county's High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) task force entering the house shortly after 8 a.m. According to the search warrant, their mission was to search for drugs, stolen property and the fruits of any illegal drug activity. Now there are questions on how the impromptu bowling tournament might affect the case against Difalco. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd denies it will have any effect. You can see the video of this incident at: http://www2.tbo.com/video/2009/sep/21/polk-county-drug-bust-54649/

Canceled Halo Game Concept Art Found on Ex-Ensemble Artist's Site
Submitted by LordXenophon 1857 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1857 days ago
Aside from releasing an RTS title in Halo Wars this year, concept art found on ex-Ensemble Studios artist Dylan Cole's website reveals yet another game that the studio was working on in the Halo universe. No name is given for the shots, though Cole calls the above image "Halo Universe City," which could mean a city from the world of Halo or a game named "Halo Universe." He also mentions that the "concept paintings" were for "a project that was canceled," so you can bet we won't be seeing these beautiful vistas in game form anytime soon. We do know that the studio was at one time working on a Halo MMO that never saw the light of day -- maybe these shots have something to do with that? We've asked Dylan Cole for more information, but for now, check out the full gallery of concept art at http://www.dylancolestudio.com/sketches/pages/HaloConcept1.html .

Iowa City’s Fourth-Annual Zombie Walk Collects a Record-Breaking Number
Submitted by LordXenophon 1857 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1857 days ago
The living turned into the dead at the fourth-annual Iowa City Zombie walk this past weekend. Mobs of people dressed as zombies paraded down Iowa City streets from Happy Hollow Park to the Deadwood to help raise awareness and donations for local charities. “If you want to step out in the grass, we can bloody up your chin,” said zombie Tim Pemrich to a human in the process of inmortalization. Approximately 150 participants spooked around town, the biggest crowd organizer and King Zombie Shawn Beatty has seen. Last year’s event wasn’t comparable with this year’s deadly walk, Beatty said. Zombies traveled from all over the Midwest to participate in the thrill.

Student Kills Intruder with Samurai Sword After PlayStation, Laptops Stolen
Submitted by LordXenophon 1862 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1862 days ago
Detectives are still interviewing a Johns Hopkins University student who fatally lacerated the upper body of a man breaking into his off-campus residence overnight. The suspect also suffered a nearly-severed hand, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The house is home to four undergrads who had already had a Sony PlayStation and two laptops stolen earlier on Monday. So when one of the students heard noises at about 1am, he went to downstairs to investigate armed with the sword. He saw that the side door to their garage had been pried open, and inside, the suspect lunged at him. The guy probably didn't deserve to die, but Police have confirmed he has priors for breaking and entering.

Pink Floyd Interested In A Music Game
Submitted by LordXenophon 1862 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1862 days ago
Veteran British rockers Pink Floyd have told the BBC that, were the offer to come up to create a Rock Band/Guitar game based on the band, they'd definitely "consider it". It's an unusually positive outlook from an old-timey rock band, who call the games "interesting new developments", particularly since so many other ageing acts - Aerosmith excluded - are so down on the genre. But don't think it has as much to do with video gaming as it does music sales, with Floyd's Nick Mason saying "I think we'd consider it. I think everyone's looking at new ways of selling the music because the business of selling records has almost disappeared. I'm of the old guard who are really sad about that, because I always liked the concept of the album - rather than just cherry-picking tracks - and also the business of the art work that went with it."

Castlevania to be Remade For Wii
Submitted by LordXenophon 1864 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1863 days ago
If the latest ESRB ratings are to be trusted, Castlevania is getting a remake on the Nintendo Wii. The newest project will be titled "Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth" and the description is: “This is a side-scrolling action game in which players battle against monsters in Dracula’s castle. Players use a chained whip to fight their way through halls and dungeons filled with zombies, skeletons, flying eyeballs, and bats. The enemy creatures frequently shoot projectiles and attack players in hand-to-hand combat. If players sustain too much damage, they keel over and emit a burst of red blood. Some rooms in the castle also have spikes or spears stained with red, blood-like splotches.”

Nintendo to Release Silent Hill: Shattered Memories in November
Submitted by LordXenophon 1863 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1863 days ago
Though it fails to offer a precise date, Nintendo's packed holiday release schedule has confirmed a November debut for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, the frigid re-imagining of the PlayStation survival-horror classic. GameStop, which is currently offering a Silent Hill soundtrack CD as a pre-order incentive, expects the game to arrive on November 3rd. According to producer Tomm Hulett, "If you've played the PlayStation game to death, you still have no idea what to expect for Shattered Memories." Oh, and definitely don't expect Dahlia to be a robot in this one.

4 Sites Where You Can Download Old PC Games For Free
Submitted by DestroyerOfWorlds 1864 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1863 days ago
There are sufficient free games available for the budget gamer, many of which we’ve already reviewed on MakeUseOf, but it’s not the only alternative. Sometimes, developers choose to re-release their games as freeware, or sometimes they simply neglect to support their creations and let the support dwindle away. Whatever the reason, a lot of commercial games – which, admittedly, often work with a bigger team on a bigger budget – become free over time. Today we’ll take a look at the best sites to download old PC games for free. These will include (abandonware) DOS games, but also newer releases that are thrown to the masses by publishers in a good mood.

Why President Obama Did Not Get a Wii For His Birthday
Submitted by LordXenophon 1866 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1864 days ago
All that Gamescom, Quakecon and Blizzcon news last week distracted from a key story reported by the LA Times: Why Barack Obama didn't get a Wii for his 48th birthday on August 4. The Times ran a story last week about how America's vice president, Joe Biden, has been trying to strengthen his relationship with President Barack Obama. One method? Get that man a Wii. One White House official recalls the vice president fretting over what to get Obama for his 48th birthday earlier this month. Biden wanted to go with a Nintendo Wii. Told that Obama's daughters already have one, a disappointed Biden said, "You're kidding." Instead, he went with a golf range-finder to help the president judge distances to the hole. But what if the President would have enjoyed a Wii of his own? Bad move, or is one Wii per White-Household enough?

Dear President Obama…

President Obama, for the second time this year, addressed parents of our country to be much more attentive to our children, which included “putting away the Xbox.” Does gaming really distract our children’s mental fruition that much that it needs to be controlled to a point where it should be almost obsolete in their daily lives? See what Yaris Gutierrez has to say about this issue.
