Why would a gamer need real pain to enjoy virtual worlds?

This is my vote for most retarded game product idea for 2007. Where is it posted? In Scientific American *gasp* As an entertainment product I give it a -5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Now as a device for training military personnel in virtual environments...maybe. As a diabolical mind experiment practiced on unwilling subject strapped to their chairs or as a torture device...brilliant!

30 lbs of pressure psi sounds like a lot... but is it?

What amount of "sensation" would sell best? and is 30 psi too much?
Do we even know for sure how much "pain" this is actually causing?
If we assume it isn't painful, is it still a ridiculous idea?

Assuming its not painful to the avg person, it sounds like a perfectly normal idea to me. Otherwise-- sounds kind of freakish.

On the one hand, I agree it's a horrible idea. On the other, I'm willing to bet there would be a market for it. People underestimate the number of weirdos in the world. After all, someone was weird enough to think of it in the first place.

My god I sweat enough while gaming. I could just imagine what I would smell like after 12 hours in my chair wearing a flak jacket.

I like how at the end of the article it even suggested it will soon support role playing games and children games.

"Timmy! Pick the red square!" *picks purple cow* *punchpunchpunchpunch*
"NO TIMMY! BAD TIMMY! RED SQUARE! PICK IT!"

Pay $170 bucks to have my body beat on and have pain inflicted on me? I'll have to pass. Good find though. I think they should have just stuck to the original design to help doctors take care of inmates.

Sounds interesting. Reminds me of VR movies in the 90's.
