Primary Motivations

Examining primary motivations, the study found that the top three motivations were: 1) making progress, 2) being immersed in the MMO, and 3) exploring the world. The bottom three motivations were: 1) escaping from RL problems, 2) role-playing, and 3) becoming powerful. It is noteworthy that players differentiate and respond differently to "making progress" and "becoming powerful." While no surprise to regular MMO players, it bears pointing out that it is ironic that role-playing is one of the least important motivations in online role-playing games. The study also noted that men were about 3 times more likely to pick competition, analysis, and power as their primary motivation and women were about twice as likely to pick socializing and making friends as their primary motivation. Finally, it indicated that players driven by power and competition tend to be younger.

I dont know for one to say ownership, as you stated not much can be owned or individual in the modern mmorpg, as everything with enough effort and time can be optained by everyone, thats a big problem nothing is unique anymore, to many people have the same stuff, which in the sense of pvp leads to skill battles but still it would be kinda cool to say hey im the only person on this particular server, or even this game to own this particular item.

Making progress has never been a definable draw to me, but finding and owning - getting to modify and take possession of some part of the world - has. I don't think the study looked at ownership as a motivator (not surprising, when modern MMOs offer so little in ownership potential).
