Our Virtual Bodies, Ourselves?

What do our virtual bodies say about us? More importantly, are certain people more likely to choose a particular kind of body type in the virtual world? The study finds two interesting things. First of all, much of avatar choice seems to revolve around mirroring the self; taller people prefer taller avatars, older people prefer older avatars, etc. Second, different personalities and motivations are drawn to different character types. Achievement oriented players are more drawn to Large and Dark characters, while socializers and explorers more commonly prefer Cute and Lithe characters.

A very interresting read.

I had a few chuckles remembering certain gamers I'd met online and the jokes about them being children. Based on their avatar, maybe they were!!

My avatars do tend to mirror me in some fashion. They are usually tall, as I am IRL. Sometimes, that can effect gameplay with point of view. So, there can be a logical reason for height one way or another. I have noticed that any avatar of mine that has been short often was more funny...childlike even.

I don't really consider myself achievement oriented, but love playing 'dark' characters purely because they can be more complex in nature. What brought me to this point? Can I be redeemed and would I want it?

It is fun to see how people physically resemble their avatars. It's almost as fun as looking at how people start to look like their dogs and visa versa.

Neat article & interesting study! Thanks for the link.

While I object to the usage of the term "cute", I have found that the socializers that I know tend for the more lithe races.

What really? I usually pick the avatar based on the story I have in my head for who the character is. Huh.

I'm an Explorer and socializer, but can't say I'm drawn to cute or lithe characters - never have liked gnomes and elves. Give me Dwarves and Orcs, old grizzled humans (yeah, okay, I'm 39 and like older characters) and funky trolls.
