Is the video-game industry recession-proof?

MSNBC takes a look at how the video game industry is doing during the slow down. Of course they call all the stuff we play video games, but we'll overlook their n00bness.

I agree with Sam gaming companies are going to cut cost and delay risky projects that are not sure winners and wait the storm out because once right after the recession people are going to buy like wild fire....

But I can see where the recession proof theory might be valid since gaming is international a weaker dollar means higher exports/higher international sales, and people who's hobby it is to drink during bad times like a recession, many people game during bad times (but I don't believe they will buy NEW games...)

Well it may be wishfull thinking here but I sure hope it is with such large budgets allocated to the really big games it would be detrimental to the industry for perception alone to drive funding away.

No industry is recession proof. I haven't read the article, but I will answer the question IMO.

Lots of game companies have recently announced poor financials and restructuring inthe past 2 months. Then you have the EA/Activision success.

You are going to see lots more downsizing, restructuring and merging in the coming year or so. Just like any recession, those who can survive the storm will be even better positioned afterwards.

Ih this article, they ask whether the video game industry is recession proof. Then they compare it to the movie industry, after which they say it's not really the same as the movie industry. Then they get an expert (?) opinion, which amounts to "probably not". Then they sort of conclude with "probably not I guess".

It's this kind of insightful, deep reporting that makes MSN special.
