I think the Firefly universe has the potential to make a wonderfully rich gaming environment. From dusty western towns, to bustling markets, to massive technology-infested cities. The possibilities for professions are quite large. Although, without aliens, character classes would all tend to be human (do Reavers count?).

That having been said, I have had my hopes dashed so many times by people trying to resurrect Firefly, I'm getting very gun shy. However, if it realizes its potential, I'm all over it.

I never actually caught this show.

I don't know if I need a game, but I'd be interested in watching another 335,345,753,545,765 episodes.

Oh I'm well aware this was 8 months ago. I figured with it seeming to be closer to announcing a production start date, it might be time to rekindle some interest.

This is all somewhat misleading. Multiverse has the rights to it but they aren't going to be the developers. They are looking (and still were a few months ago when I met them at the independent mmorpg developers conference in Minneapolis) for a developer to actually make the game. So until then, this is nothing more than a press release and a conditional license.

I don't think the multiverse engine is on-par with the usual commercial grade MMORPG engines, so I very much doubt that if and when Firefly Online sees the light of day that it will be anything spectacular.

Ah well.

I'm holding out hope that Joss Whedon and Tim Minear have enough creative influence that it actually looks like the Firefly from the series and movie. If (and that's a very big if) they can pull it off effectively with some solid game play quests and interface, then they may just have the potential to create one of the best games of next year. Again, a very big if.

This could be huge... but I'm not holding my breath. Fingers crossed, though.

I love Firefly but as long as Fox is involved then we will never see the true potential of it.
